Job Description:
Own day-to-day batching operations, product quality, and plant throughput for a high-output commercial RMX plant. Reports to the Operations Manager (Ready-Mix). Lead scheduling, people, quality control, safety, compliance, and reliability to deliver the right mix—first time, on time—while optimising costs, uptime, and customer service.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Operations & Scheduling: Run end-to-end batching (order intake → mix selection → batching → dispatch); optimise production slots, truck cycles, and stock levels (cement, aggregates, admixtures, water/ice/steam).
  • Quality & Concrete Technology: Execute mix designs; control fresh/hardened properties (slump, air, temp, density, strength), yield and variability; manage trials, non-conformances, and corrective actions.
  • Compliance & Standards: Ensure conformance to EN 206/SANS (or local equivalents); maintain full production, quality, and traceability records.
  • People Leadership: Roster, coach, and performance-manage operators/batchers/weighbridge; drive a safety-first culture (LOTO, confined spaces, working at heights, traffic rules).
  • Maintenance & Reliability: Plan PMs; lead first-response repairs on bins, conveyors, mixers, dust collection; coordinate breakdowns and spares with workshop.
  • Systems & Data: Operate/optimise batching & dispatch software (e.g., Command Alkon/Marcotte/Jonel); analyse KPIs to improve cement factor, yield control, energy use, and uptime.
  • Stakeholders & Customers: Liaise with sales/QA/clients on specs, trials, technical submittals; lead investigations and service recovery where needed.

Required Qualifications:

  • 10+ years in commercial ready-mix production/plant management, including high-throughput operations.
  • Strong concrete technology knowledge (materials, admixtures, moisture/temperature control; troubleshooting fresh/hardened concrete).
  • Competent on batching systems (Command Alkon/Marcotte/Jonel or similar) and Excel-level analysis for yield/cement factor/variance.
  • Working knowledge of EN 206/SANS production control and conformity (or readiness to upskill).

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Formal concrete/quality certifications (e.g., ACI Field Testing Technician Grade I; plant/manager certifications or equivalent).
  • Environmental management exposure in RMX plants.
  • Diploma/Degree in Civil/Materials/Industrial/Mechanical Engineering or Construction Materials Technology.

Skills:

  • Calm, decisive leadership under delivery pressure; coaching mindset; strong communication with sales/logistics/QA.
  • Safety and compliance orientation; structured problem-solving; data-driven decision-making.
  • Planning, rostering, and stakeholder management across plant, workshop, and customers.

Relevant Experience:

  • Proven delivery of OTIF dispatch, cycle-time reduction, cube strength/compliance, cement-factor optimisation, uptime, and housekeeping/safety targets in RMX operations.
